BookGarden, the short of it:

This site is dedicated to those who love to read books; more specifically, this site is dedicated to those who enjoy reading books and then blogging about them.

BookGarden will serve as an aggregating tool for those who want to not only post their own book blogging entries, but want to find what others have said in their own blog posts about books in which they are interested.

This site is geared toward those who don't just consume books, but to those who thoroughly enjoy engaging themselves in a story, learning about new ideas and people, engaging in theology, and engaging with others on the internet who have similar passions. We hope that your "Book Garden" will be well-tended :)

Remember, the more the help out with the BookGarden, the better this thing will grow!

BookGarden, the long version:

People already have blogs. People already read books. And people already engage in what many call "book blogging."

BookGarden will be a tool that book bloggers can use to post and track their own book blogging entries, and they can also search to see what other posts have been made about the books in which they are interested.

To get started, create an account and then search for a book --any book-- in the top search bar. To be safe, go ahead an pick one of the books already there on the right in the "Most Recently-Blogged Books & Entries" section. You will see search results as returned by Amazon.com.

Right away you'll see three options (click on each to see a more detailed description):
  • --> This is the book I'm blogging
  • --> Who else is blogging this book (n entries)
  • --> RSS feed for this book

Trackbacks: One of Bookgarden's exciting features (fresh out of the gate!) is its ability to support trackbacks for adding entries to the BookGarden database. Your blogging software will need to support sending trackback pings (like Movable Type or Wordpress) in order for this to work. First, make sure you're logged in, and then search for the book you want to add. When it shows up in the search results, click the "This is the book I'm blogging" link. Find the trackback link labeled "Tracking link" and then right-click on it and copy the link location (or "shortcut" if you're using IE). When you make your book-blogging entry in your blogging software, put this URL into the box typically labled something like "URLs to Ping." When you post your entry, it will ping BookGarden and add both the permalink of your book-blogging post, but also the title of it as well, associating that post with your account. In the Recent section that appears at the top right of BookGarden's homepage, you'll see your book-blogging entry show up immediately and it will be labeled "tracked on" such and such a date and time, as opposed to "posted on."

Neat, huh?

Here is a list of all of the main features of BookGarden that come to mind:
  • Search Amazon.com's entire library of books and add links to your book-blogging entries about them.

  • Ability to manage your book-blogging entries.

  • Ability to see who else blogs about each book, complete with links to each of their posts.

  • Keep track of each book with its own RSS feed to see who else blogs about it.

  • If your blogging software supports trackbacks, you can use the trackback link given for each book to add an entry when posting your entry.

  • Coming soon: a javascript include that you can put on your site to display the books you've been blogging.

  • Coming soon: ability to make a single blog entry be associated with more than one post (i.e. Stanley Hauerwas's Community of Character references and incorporates much of community aspects from the novel Wathership Down, so a single post about both would be very appropriate).

  • if you think you have a cool, useful feature to add, or if you have questions or a bug to report.
